Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) is the largest university for engineering education and research in Finland. It is located on a campus in Otaniemi (Espoo) on the west side of the capital, Helsinki. The university is comprised of approximately 70 laboratories. The number of undergraduate and graduate students is about 14000 and has been rapidly growing in resent years.
The Electron Physics Group (EPG) is part of the Micro and Nanosciences Laboratory (MNS), one of the 20 laboratories in the Department of Electrical and Communications Engineering. The group provides higher education and research in the field of modern semiconductor technology. The activities include semiconductor physics, processing and measurement technology of semiconductor devices, Integrated Circuit (IC) technology and microsensors.
Our first priority is to provide a high technical background for the students considering the growing Finnish semiconductor industry. The Electron Physics Group is a member of the Micro and Nanofabrication Center (MINFAB) of TKK, which provides clean room and semiconductor processing facilities for research and educational purposes at Micronova.
Education is funded by TKK but research is mainly funded by external sources, especially the National Technology Agency (Tekes) and the Academy of Finland. Areas of current research activity in Electron Physics Group include light emitting silicon based structures, characterization of defects in semiconductors, internal gettering of defects, and magnetic semiconductors.
